IFF3: Yokohama

The Third International Fishers Forum (IFF3) was held in Yokohama, Japan, July 25-29, 2005. The Organization for the Promotion of Responsible Tuna Fisheries (OPRT) hosted the meeting, with support from the Japan Fisheries Agency and US Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.

IFF3 was convened jointly with the International Tuna Fishers Conference on Responsible Fisheries. More than 250 fishermen, researchers, government officials and members of environmental non-government organizations from 26 countries met to exchange views on various issues important for ensuring the sustainability of tuna resources. In addition to the incidental bycatch of sea turtles and seabirds in longline fisheries, the IFF3 theme expanded to include sustainable tuna and shark fisheries; fishing capacity; production; marketing; consumption monitoring; illegal, unregulated and unreported fisheries, cetacean depredation, and the employment of market-based mechanisms, including eco-labeling, to influence marine capture fisheries’ practices and management.
