Fourth International Fishers Forum
The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council together with the Instituto Costarricense de Pesca y Acuicultura (Costa Rica Fisheries and Aquaculture Institute, INCOPESCA), with assistance by the local WWF office, will host the Fourth International Fishers Forum (IFF4) to be held in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, November 12-15, 2007. Meeting logistics, travel details, and registration information will be available soon.

In past Forums, fishers, industry representatives, researchers, government officials and wildlife conservation advocates have met to exchange views on various issues important for ensuring the sustainability of pelagic longline fisheries and fishery resources. IFF4 will continue the focus of previous Forums on solving the incidental capture of seabirds and sea turtles in longline fisheries. In addition we will address bycatch management of two additional species groups, sharks and cetaceans, and approaches to mainstream bycatch avoidance strategies through commercially viable and equitable regulatory methods. The aim of IFF4 is to motivate fishers and industry to recognize and find effective and practical ways to address these issues and to further promote responsible longline fisheries.

First International Fishers' Forum
The First International Fishers' Forum - Solving the Incidental Capture of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries was held in Auckland, New Zealand in November 2000. This four day meeting was attended by fishers, gear technologists, researchers and government officials. The purpose of the forum was to exchange ideas and information on measures being used or developed around the world to reduce capture of seabirds on longlines. This information exchange will lead to a more co-ordinated response to this environmental issue and accelerate progress in solving this problem globally.

Mission Statement

The primary mission of the forum is to convene an international meeting of fishermen to address possible solutions to incidental bycatch of sea turtles and seabirds by longline fishing gear.

The objectives of the meeting are to:

  1. increase the awareness of fishermen that incidental longline catch of seabirds and sea turtles may pose a serious problem to these populations and to the continued operations of longline fishing;
  2. promote the development and use of practical and effective seabird and sea turtle management and mitigation measures by longline fishermen;
  3. foster an exchange and dissemination of information among fishermen, scientists, resource managers and other interested parties on the use mitigation measures and the development of coordinated approaches to testing new measures;
  4. promote the development and implementation of collaborative mitigation research studies by scientists, fishermen, resource managers, and other interested parties; and,
  5. build on previous meetings to encourage continued progress and new participants.
